Who Needs a VIN Check?

According to Rhode Island State Law, a VIN check is required for: 

  • All vehicles being registered in Rhode Island that were previously titled or registered in another state.
  • This requirement applies to all model years, effective January 1, 2024.
  • Exemptions: Brand-new vehicles with a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) typically do not require a VIN check. 

VIN Check Checklist

Use this list to ensure you have everything prepared before arriving at the station.

  • The Vehicle: The vehicle being inspected must be physically present.
  • Proof of Ownership
  • Original Title: If you own the vehicle outright.
  • Copy of Title: If there is a lien on the vehicle (the bank holds the original).
  • Proof of Ownership: If the previous state did not issue titles for that vehicle type (e.g., old registration or paid sales tax form).
  • Fee$20.00 per vehicle.
  • Identification: A valid Driver’s License or government-issued photo ID.
  • Vehicle Mileage: You will need to provide the current odometer reading.
