The East Providence Police Planning and Training Unit is the vital operational branch responsible for preparing the agency for the future, maintaining peak department readiness, and steering the onboarding of the city’s next generation of law enforcement professionals.

Unit Overview

Housed under the Operations Division, the Planning and Training Unit sets and maintains the high standard of excellence required of all sworn personnel. The unit ensures that every officer receives rigorous continuing education, while simultaneously managing the comprehensive, multi-step pipeline required to source, vet, and hire qualified department candidates.

Recruitment & Hiring Responsibilities

  • Application Inquiries: Serving as the direct point of contact for prospective recruits navigating the PoliceApp digital application platform.
  • Candidate Vetting: Coordinating the extensive screening process, which includes coordinating oral examinations, specialized drug screens, psychological reviews, and meticulous background investigations.
  • Onboarding Success: Actively steering recruitment drives that have successfully onboarded entry-level recruits and lateral transfers from other law enforcement agencies.

Core Training Responsibilities

  • Academy Preparation: Sponsoring and preparing selected recruits as they transition into the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy.
  • Field Training Coordination: Partnering with supervisors to oversee the rigorous Field Training & Evaluation Program (FTEP), pairing newly graduated academy recruits with experienced Field Training Officers.
  • In-Service Education: Structuring ongoing physical, tactical, legal, and firearms training curricula to keep current active-duty officers ahead of modern policing standards.
